Rally

Rally is a wonderful introduction for you and your dog into the world of dog sports. Precision is not required and handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage and give additional commands. You may also clap your hands, pat your legs or use any verbal means of encouragement. A course of 10-20 exercises (called stations) is designed with signs depicting each exercise that is to be performed. Handlers are allowed to walk the course without their dog (before the class starts) to become familiar with the sequence of the stations. Exercises are as simple as “sit your dog” to as complex as “walking backwards with your dog”. Some folks use Rally as an introduction of both handler and dog into the sport of Obedience.

Rally trials demonstrate the dog’s ability to follow specified routines in the ring and emphasize the exhibition of teamwork between handler and dog. The basic objective of Rally trials, however, is to recognize dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs in a manner that will reflect credit on the sport of Rally at all times and under all conditions.

The Novice course is performed on leash and has 10-15 stations. The Advanced level is off leash with 12-17 stations and 1 jump (maximum 16″ height). The Excellent level is off leash with 15-20 stations and 2 jumps.

For the serious exhibitor there are advanced titles and an annual Rally National Championship. To find out additional information go to www.akc.org and look for Rally Regulations and Rally Signs. Both files can be viewed online or ordered from the AKC Store.
